GOLF COURSES IN THE AREA

Ayrshire is the birthplace of the Open Championship, with the first ever tournament held at Prestwick Golf Club in October 1860. Trump Turnberry itself has three magnificent golf courses, but why not stay for longer and explore more of Ayrshire’s finest links courses?

ROYAL TROON GOLF COURSE

One of three Open Championship golf courses in Ayrshire, Royal Troon has held the Championship on nine occasions, most recently the 145th Open in 2016. Royal Troon is located just 45 minutes from Trump Turnberry.

PRESTWICK GOLF CLUB

Founded in 1851, Prestwick Golf Club introduced the world to the Open Championship by hosting the inaugural tournament in 1860. Prestwick had the distinct honour of hosting the first 12 Open’s, with a further 12 over the years, cementing this club in true golfing history. This world class links course is located just 40 minutes from Trump Turnberry.

OPEN LINKS OF AYRSHIRE

DUNDONALD

Opened in 2003, this modern day classic links was inspired by the timeless architecture of the great Ayrshire links courses of Royal Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes, all connected by the historic rail line. Visit Dundonald, just 40 minutes from Trump Turnberry.

GLASGOW GAILES

Gailes has hosted major championship tournaments through the years and was designed by legendary golf architect Willie Park Jnr of Musselburgh. It was opened in 1892 by Glasgow Golf Club, the 9th oldest golf club in the world and all just 40 minutes from Turnberry.

KING ROBERT THE BRUCE’S CASTLE

Turnberry Castle was originally a stronghold of the Lords of Galloway, before being passed into the possession of the Earls of Carrick around the beginning of the 13th century. In the late 13th century the castle belonged to Marjorie, the widowed Countess of Carrick. According to medieval legend, Marjorie held the visiting knight Robert de Brus captive until he agreed to marry her. The marriage between Marjorie and Robert in 1271 conveyed to him both the castle and the earldom. Their first son, also named Robert, went on to become "Robert the Bruce", the King of Scots. The ruins of the castle are located between the 9th and 10th holes of the Championship Ailsa course. In 1873, a lighthouse was built on this site by the family of acclaimed author, Robert Louis Stevenson. The ruins are still visible and the lighthouse is now a luxurious two bedroom suites and halfway house. During your stay at Trump Turnberry, it is well worth a walk out to this point on the golf course to absorb some of the authentic history that surrounds the resort.
